  • Driving Requirements & Useful Advice

Legal Requirements for Cars & Rules
    - must have driver's license, proof of ownership and insurance
    - must have a valid "Vignette" to drive on Swiss highways
    - must adapt left-side drive headlights
    - must have country sticker
    - must carry emergency warning triangle
    - children under 12 must sit in the back
    - must have appropriate car seats for young children
    - must wear seatbelts in front and back
    - cars driving uphill on mountain roads have priority over cars driving downhill
    - pedestrians and Car Postale buses have priority

The Vignette (Swiss Highway Toll tax)
Switzerland requires a "Vignette" on the windshield to drive on the highways (green signs), which you can get at gas stations, at the border, or online. Cost is about 40 CHF and vignettes are valid up to Dec 31st of the year in which they are purchased. Cars rented in Switzerland come with the Vignette. Cars rented on the French side of Geneva airport or in Italy will probably not have a Vignette.

    Speeding Limits (unless marked differently)
On Swiss highways the speed limit is 120km/h and 100km/h though towns and cities, unless marked differently. On other roads the limit is 80km/h and through towns it drop to 50 km/h. There are speed cameras.

    Petrol Stations
Most petrol stations have automatic machines which accept credit cards or cash. Verbier has two gas stations: on the Rue de Centre Sportif and on the Rue de Verbier
Generally, Swiss petrol has been cheaper than French petrol.
